Well, today I have been trying to think of an employment law “Friday Fact” but failing miserably as I have been reading all about Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh on hearing the sad news of his passing today. I was struck by how much he absolutely loved his first job. He trained first as a naval cadet in 1939 and quickly rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy serving as a midshipman, sub-lieutenant and lieutenant with various postings and responsibilities until he gave this up to become the Queen’s Consort on her Coronation in 1953. In later interviews, he said that not being able to continue his career in the navy was his one regret. It made me ponder about our first jobs and how many of us stayed in them. I did my work experience as a 15-year-old at a local solicitors firm in South Wales and knew then, that was the job I wanted to do and still very much love it!
